The Lindt & Sprüngli Farming Program

Lindt & Sprüngli is a chocolate manufacturer that produces its own cocoa mass from the cocoa beans it sources (excluding Russell Stover). This allows us to oversee the production process from the selection and sourcing of cocoa beans to the production of cocoa mass, also known as cocoa liquor, and the finished product – “from bean to bar”.

High-quality cocoa is at the heart of our chocolate. That is why we developed our own responsible sourcing program: The .

Responsible sourcing approach

Our approach to responsible sourcing of cocoa is derived from five principles, based on which we aim to address the most material impacts in the cocoa supply chain focusing on three main objectives: increasing the resilience of farming households, reducing the risk of child labor, and conserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems.

The five responsible cocoa sourcing principles are: 

  1. Pursuing long-term supplier partnerships
  2. Deploying our own responsible sourcing program
  3. Establishing traceable and transparent supply chains
  4. Continuously improving our responsible sourcing programs based on monitoring and external verification
  5. Working in partnerships and engaging in collective action through multi-stakeholder initiatives

Challenges in cocoa countries of origin

In our cocoa producing countries, cocoa production faces deep-rooted challenges. Small farms, old and diseased cocoa trees, can result in low yields and not enough income for farmers and their families. Poor infrastructure and a lack of access to farming equipment makes production even more difficult. Finally, environmental challenges such as climate change and deforestation are impacting cocoa producing countries.

It is our priority to tackle these challenges and take responsibility for sustainable cocoa cultivation. That's why we developed our own sustainability program for cocoa -  

The Farming Program

Responsible sourcing of our most important raw material cocoa is important to us. That is why Lindt & Sprüngli launched its own responsible sourcing program for the sourcing of its cocoa in 2008: The Lindt & Sprüngli Farming Program. The Farming Program focuses on three main objectives: 

  • increasing the resilience of farming households,
  • reducing the risk of child labor,
  • and conserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems. 

We aim to achieve these objectives by facilitating higher productivity of farms, providing farmer premiums and access to finance, supporting diversification of household incomes, promoting community development and improved infrastructure, contributing to the conservation of biodiversity and natural ecosystems through a combination of on- and off-farm activities, and various measures addressing the risk of child labor.

We aim to source 100% of cocoa products  – beans, butter, powder, and chocolate mass – through the Lindt & Sprüngli Farming Program or other responsible sourcing programs by 2025 (in 2024, the figure was more than 84.2%).
