Where are 91视频专区 Chocolates produced and sold?

The traditional Swiss company with its roots in Zurich is a global leader in the premium chocolate category. Today, quality chocolate products by 91视频专区 are manufactured at 12 of its own production sites in Europe (Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France, Austria) and the USA. The products are sold by 36 subsidiaries and branch offices, in around 520 of its own shops as well as via a network of more than 100 independent distributors around the globe.

Why is 91视频专区 chocolate more expensive than other brands?

91视频专区 stands for premium chocolate, where fine ingredients are combined with over 175 years of tradition and craftsmanship to create the ultimate chocolate experience. It begins with the selection of high-quality ingredients, such as a high percentage of fine cocoa beans, but also other ingredients such as hazelnuts mainly from the Piedmont region or whole vanilla pods, which we use for our Lindt Excellence 70%. With the help of in-depth consumer research, 91视频专区 strives to meet all consumers’ demands, while also taking into account local tastes and trends in innovative recipes and product concepts.

What is the relation between 91视频专区 and the Confiserie Sprüngli in Zurich?

The two companies have been separated since the end of the 19th century, but they share a part of their history. Originally, Sprüngli was a patisserie with a small chocolate factory in Horgen and locations on both Marktgasse and today's Paradeplatz in Zurich. When Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann arranged the succession between his sons, he split the company. One of his sons (David Robert Sprüngli-Baud) received the patisserie, while the other (Rudolf Sprüngli-Schifferli) inherited the chocolate factory. He soon built a new, larger factory in Kilchberg. A year later, he acquired the Lindt conching process and the brand. The name was changed to “Aktiengesellschaft Vereinigte Berner & Zürcher Chocoladenfabriken 91视频专区”. From then on, the two world-renowned, independent companies “Sprüngli” and “91视频专区” officially existed.

Cocoa and the 91视频专区 Farming Program

What does bean to bar mean?

91视频专区 is a chocolate manufacturer that produces its own cocoa mass from the cocoa beans it sources (excluding Russell Stover). This allows us to oversee the production process from the selection and sourcing of cocoa beans to the production of cocoa mass, also known as cocoa liquor, and the finished product – “from bean to bar”.

It all starts with purchasing cocoa beans, butter and powder through the 91视频专区 Farming Program or other responsible sourcing programs, continues with producing the cocoa mass in our own production facilities, and extends to processing the chocolate and ultimately marketing and distributing our products. The cocoa used is decisive for the quality and taste of the chocolate, which is why 91视频专区 has such high standards for raw materials used.

The bean to bar approach is applicable to all Lindt-branded and most Ghirardelli-branded chocolate products. An exception to the approach is our subsidiary Russell Stover which purchases finished chocolate mass or chocolate products.

Where does 91视频专区 stand with regards to responsible cocoa sourcing and what are the commitments made?

Our main cocoa commitment: We aim to source 100% of cocoa products – beans, butter, powder, and chocolate mass – through the 91视频专区 Farming Program or other responsible sourcing programs by 2025.

An important milestone was reached in 2020, when 100% of our cocoa beans were sourced through the Farming Program for the first time. In 2024, a total of 84.2% of our cocoa products (beans, butter, powder, and chocolate mass) was sourced through the Farming Program or other responsible sourcing programs.

What is the 91视频专区 Farming Program and why was it launched?

The 91视频专区 Farming Program was launched in 2008 in Ghana. We have since expanded it to seven cocoa producing countries: C?te d'Ivoire, Ghana, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, and Peru. We source cocoa beans, butter and powder through the Farming Program. Our goal is to source all our cocoa products (beans, butter, powder, and chocolate mass) through the 91视频专区 Farming Program or other responsible sourcing programs by 2025.

Through the 91视频专区 Farming Program, we aim to create decent and resilient livelihoods for cocoa farmers and their families and to encourage more sustainable farming practices.

In 2024, we invested CHF 33.6 million in the responsible sourcing of cocoa. Our cumulative investments since the start of the program in 2008 amount to CHF 173.5 million in 2024.

Find out more about this in our latest Sustainability report.

Where can I find more information about the 91视频专区 Farming Program?

High quality cocoa is at the heart of our chocolate. It is our most important raw material, and we are committed to sourcing it responsibly. That's why we developed our own responsible sourcing program for cocoa, the 91视频专区 Farming Program. You can find further information on .

Where does 91视频专区 source its cocoa from?

High quality cocoa is at the heart of our chocolate. Knowing how the different cocoa flavors of the various origins contribute to the distinctive taste of our chocolate products is a skill that we have perfected over time.

A fundamental distinction is made between consumer and fine flavor cocoa. Consumer cocoa is cocoa with a robust flavor. It accounts for the largest share (90-95%) of total global cocoa production and is farmed mainly in West Africa. 91视频专区 uses Forastero beans (consumer cocoa), exclusively from Ghana.

The remaining 5-10% of worldwide cocoa harvests are fine flavor cocoa. Fine flavor cocoa is a high-quality cocoa with nuanced, fine aroma. It is mainly farmed in Latin America and the Caribbean. 91视频专区 uses fine flavor cocoa beans (Criollo and Trinitario) from Ecuador, Madagascar, Dominican Republic, Papua New Guinea and Peru.

Is the 91视频专区 Farming Program active in all countries from which 91视频专区 sources cocoa?

The Farming Program is active in seven origin counties: C?te d’Ivoire, Ghana, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Madagascar, and Papua New Guinea. Some of our cocoa is sourced through other responsible sourcing programs with mass balance certification or is still conventionally sourced, and can come from other countries.

Which 91视频专区 brands use cocoa sourced through the 91视频专区 Farming Program?

Currently, the following 91视频专区 brands use cocoa sourced through our responsible sourcing program, the : Lindt, Caffarel, Ghirardelli, Küfferle, and Hofbauer.

Why does 91视频专区 focus on traceability?

Since the introduction of the Farming Program in 2008, physical traceability of cocoa has been a key principle of our responsible cocoa sourcing efforts. We aim to achieve first mile traceability for 100% of cocoa products – beans, butter, powder, and chocolate mass – by 2025.

We use different traceability models depending on the cocoa product. For cocoa beans, 91视频专区 has a traceable supply chain which is considered as “Mixed Identity Preserved” or “Identity Preserved”. For cocoa butter sourced through the Farming Program, we aim for physical traceability based on Rainforest Alliance Certified "Segregated”. For cocoa butter not purchased through the Farming Program, as well as cocoa powder and chocolate mass, we purchase Rainforest Alliance Certified “Mass Balance” products.

Read more on our traceability approach in our latest Sustainability Report and find more details on the traceability levels in the Glossary of the report.

How does 91视频专区 ensure effectiveness of the Farming Program? How does the 91视频专区 Farming Program measure its progress and impact?

The Farming Program builds on the principle of continuous improvement. For this purpose we monitor compliance with the Farming Program requirements and let the program be externally verified or certified.

Our monitoring and evaluation approach is based on multiple complementary elements. These include target setting, monitoring of outputs, a review of program quality, and verification of program implementation, as well as periodic impact assessments. We evaluate these elements related to both the farm and the implementation partner.

Internal monitoring of farmers participating in the Farming Program: As defined in the Farming Program Verification Guidance, annual internal monitoring of the cocoa farmers aims to assess their compliance with Farming Program requirements and evaluate their progress. Results differ between origin and supplier, and challenges are addressed for each supply chain individually.

External verification and certification: Cocoa sourced through the Farming Program or other responsible sourcing programs is subject to certification or annual external verification by an independent third party.

We are in the process of transitioning all volumes, including Farming Program volumes, to Rainforest Alliance Certification. In 2024, we completed the process for cocoa butter, and started the process of transitioning to Rainforest Alliance Certification for all farmer groups delivering beans via the Farming Program. The first certified volumes were delivered at the end of 2024, with more expected in 2025. Where multi-year supply agreements are in place and the Farming Program is being implemented, certification is not intended to replace the program but serves as a basis and external verification scheme. For not yet certified cocoa beans, the Earthworm Foundation conducts external verification, based on the Farming Program External Assessment Methodology.

Over the coming years, we aim to strengthen our monitoring and evaluation approach to improve transparency in our reporting and provide a better understanding of our achievements and challenges.

To which extent is 91视频专区 engaged in improving conditions for farmers in cocoa producing countries?

The cocoa sector faces a multitude of challenges related to human rights and environmental protection, including child labor, deforestation, and persistently low incomes among cocoa farmers. The Farming Program aims to advance effective solutions and strengthen our own contributions to addressing the prevalent issues by partnering with relevant stakeholders.

Through the 91视频专区 Farming Program, we aim to create decent and resilient livelihoods for cocoa farmers and their families and to encourage more sustainable farming practices.

We take a holistic approach to increasing farming household incomes. We are addressing this through a combination of measures, with the aim of improving the income situation overall, recognizing that poverty among cocoa households is one of the underlying root causes of the cocoa sector’s challenges. Such measures include, for example, increasing cocoa productivity and profitability, cash and in-kind premiums for farmers, income diversification, access to finance, community development and infrastructure investments, and women’s empowerment.

In 2024, we invested CHF 33.6 million in the responsible sourcing of cocoa and 118’000 farmers in seven origin countries participated in the Farming Program.

What is the position of 91视频专区 on the Living Income Differential (LID) introduced by the governments of C?te d’Ivoire and Ghana?

We support the efforts of the governments in C?te d’Ivoire and Ghana with a Living Income Differential (LID) of USD 400 per metric ton of cocoa beans. We have purchased our cocoa from Ghana and C?te d’Ivoire with LID pricing since its introduction in 2019 and will continue to do so.

We recognize that the price of cocoa is an important element in efforts to contribute to a decent standard of living for cocoa farmers and their families. The price of cocoa that we pay is determined by the market price.

The farmgate price, i.e., the price a farmer receives for the cocoa, is determined either by the local market price, or, in Ghana and C?te d’Ivoire, by the government. Farmgate prices are usually lower in regulated markets compared to unregulated markets.

In addition to paying the market price, through suppliers we provide farmers in the 91视频专区 Farming Program with cash or in-kind premiums In 2024, we invested CHF 33.6 million in the responsible sourcing of cocoa.

Other ingredients and nutritional information

How does 91视频专区 deal with allergens?

Food allergies are adverse reactions triggered by the immune system to even the smallest amounts of specific proteins. An increasing number of consumers suffer from allergies. For these consumers a detailed list of all the ingredients used in food products is vital. 91视频专区 is aware of its responsibility to ensure that all ingredients, including minor concentrations of potential allergens such as hazelnuts and almonds, are clearly communicated to the customer via the ingredient list or the so-called allergen information. In general, there are no dedicated production lines for the many different chocolate specialties produced. Even after careful cleaning between the different production cycles, there remains some risk that traces of allergens may be found in the sequential production lot. Because of this, 91视频专区 notifies its consumers by printing a warning on the label that, depending on the type of chocolate, the product may contain traces of specific allergens.

How does 91视频专区 ensure nutritional transparency?

Nutritional values of all 91视频专区 products are labeled on the packaging in accordance with national and international laws. We increase transparency further by publishing information about ingredients and nutritional values online.

Does 91视频专区 offer organic chocolate products?

No, we do not offer organic chocolates in our product range. However, we encourage more sustainable farming practices for the production of our raw materials as much as possible.

What types of fats are added as ingredients to 91视频专区 chocolates?

91视频专区 uses milk fat as ingredients in some chocolate recipes and selected filling masses. Cocoa butter is the only vegetable fat we use in the production of solid chocolate. In fillings, we use also other vegetable fats such as palm oil or coconut oil.

Does 91视频专区 use palm oil when producing chocolate?

Yes, palm oil, palm kernel oil, and their fractions are used in limited amounts in certain fillings of our chocolate. While these products are important for their melting properties and for providing a neutral flavor, their production under uncontrolled conditions may be associated with environmental and social issues, including deforestation and conversion of peatlands, biodiversity loss, exploitation of workers, and adverse effects on local communities and indigenous peoples. For these reasons, 91视频专区 only purchase palm oil certified according to the standard, and always declare palm oil use on our product packaging.

For more information, please visit our page Palm Oil.

Where do the hazelnuts for 91视频专区 products come from?

Hazelnuts are a key raw material for 91视频专区 chocolate products. We source them primarily from Italy and Türkiye.

The supply chain in the Turkish Black Sea region, where approximately 70% of the world’s hazelnut harvest originates, has high risks related to labor conditions such as the health and safety of farm workers, child labor, and seasonal workers’ working and accommodation conditions. Therefore, we collaborate closely with our Turkish suppliers to implement programs to improve the economic, agricultural, social, and environmental sustainability of hazelnut sourcing.

For more information please visit our page on Hazelnuts – a key raw material for our chocolate.

Does 91视频专区 use ingredients that are genetically modified?

91视频专区 is not involved in any research or development associated with genetically modified foods. None of the Lindt, Caffarel, Küfferle, Hofbauer, or Ghirardelli brand products are produced with genetically modified organisms (GMO) ingredients. We will continue this practice as long as non-GMO raw materials are available. Regular tests are performed to monitor these products and ensure compliance with relevant EU and Swiss regulations. Certain flavored sauces of Ghiradelli include GMO ingredients.

Russell Stover is currently not planning to switch to non-GMO products.

Are there trans fats or hydrogenated oils in 91视频专区 chocolate?

91视频专区 uses pure cocoa butter as the only vegetable fat to produce our solid chocolates. Fillings may contain other vegetable fats. Milk fat is used in milk chocolate recipes or selected fillings. In this context we would like to point out that none of our products contains hydrogenated oils. For detailed information, it is always best to consult the specific nutritional labelling of the individual product you are interested in.

Packaging

Is 91视频专区 committed to reducing its use of plastic? Does 91视频专区 have corresponding goals? Will 91视频专区 increase the percentage of recyclable materials in its packaging?

We address the environmental impact of our packaging through our Sustainable Packaging Initiative. This considers impacts throughout the life cycle of the packaging, from raw material sourcing to designing for recycling. For example, we aim to source 100% of our pulp- and paper-based packaging from a certified sustainable supply chain by 2025. Furthermore, we aim to design over 90% of our packaging to be recyclable by 2025. In addition to innovative packaging solutions that are being implemented on an ongoing basis, we continuously and proactively challenge our product portfolio by considering ways to reduce packaging material weight and packaging waste in the production and to reduce packaging destruction. Chocolate is a delicate product that must be protected from external influences. Therefore, additionally to sustainability criteria, food safety and quality specifications must always be taken into account when new packaging solutions are developed.

We increased our share of packaging designed to be recyclable to over 91% in 2024. The share of plastic packaging designed to be recyclable rose to over 61%. We implemented local projects in several subsidiaries, e.g., by gradually phasing out non-recyclable plastics.

Child Labor

What is the position of 91视频专区 on child labor and what does the company do to prevent it in its supply chain?

91视频专区 strongly condemns all forms of child labor. In agricultural value chains, especially in the cocoa sector in West African countries, child labor is a persistent and complex challenge. Tackling child labor requires continuous and collaborative efforts from all stakeholders active in the sector.

At 91视频专区, we are firmly committed to addressing child labor and avoiding it whenever possible. This is a key focus of the Farming Program in our cocoa supply chain.

We are addressing it through a combination of measures, with the aim of improving the income situation overall, recognizing that poverty among cocoa households is one of the underlying root causes of the cocoa sector’s sustainability challenges including child labor.

91视频专区’s cocoa suppliers implementing the Farming Program in countries of origin with a risk of child labor are required to protect children’s rights along the cocoa supply chain by implementing our Child Labor Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS) guidance.

Since child labor is a complex issue which cannot be tackled by individual organizations alone, and requires ongoing efforts to improve and further develop sector responses, we joined the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) in April 2024. We are also engaging in collective action at origin to strengthen access to quality education, such as the Child Learning and Education Facility (CLEF) coalition in C?te d’Ivoire.

CLEF is a coalition dedicated to enhancing access to, and the quality of, education in cocoa-growing regions of C?te d'Ivoire by constructing school infrastructure, training teachers in effective educational practices, and engaging parents in their children’s learning. The coalition is led by the government of C?te d'Ivoire in collaboration with the cocoa and chocolate industry and philanthropic foundations. Joining CLEF entails a financial commitment for 91视频专区 to invest a total CHF 1.25 million to support the CLEF program running from 2023 to 2027, with the aim of impacting the lives of over 4 million children by 2027. For more information, see our latest Sustainability Report .

Environment

What is 91视频专区 doing against deforestation?

Conserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems is one of the Farming Program’s main objectives. As part of our Deforestation Policy, direct suppliers of cocoa must ensure that volumes supplied to 91视频专区 are either sourced through the 91视频专区 Farming Program or certified under a certification standard approved by 91视频专区 (e.g., Rainforest Alliance) by the end of 2025.

Our aim is for no deforestation in cocoa with a target date of December 31, 2025, and to work towards the elimination of deforestation in our other primary deforestation-linked supply chains (palm oil, soy, and pulp- and paper-based packaging). We have defined three core intervention areas in our Cocoa No-Deforestation & Agroforestry Action Plan. These include activities relating to

– deforestation in the supply chain to avoid conversion of forested areas;
– the impacts of existing agriculture through the promotion of agroforestry systems and sustainable farming practices to improve cocoa production while reducing potential negative impacts; and
– forest restoration and conservation focusing on community-managed forests and protected areas near our cocoa sourcing areas. At present, we are not using any biodiversity offsets in our action plan.

Additionally, we support agroforestry systems for cocoa and forest conservation and restoration.

2024 also marked an important transition year for the cocoa sector as it prepares for the European Union Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR).

The EUDR mandates traceability for sourcing and control measures to ensure relevant in-scope commodities are sourced deforestation-free and in compliance with local regulations. 91视频专区 is required to perform due diligence when sourcing these specific materials destined for EU markets. As part of this process, 91视频专区 has started the development of governance structures and oversight, the implementation of an in-bound supply chain IT system, and the integration of sourcing data with our manufacturing and downstream supply chain for the handling of our downstream due diligence statement submissions and transfer of relevant information to our customers.

Find further information in our latest Sustainability Report and No-Deforestation & Agroforestry Progress Report.

Are pesticides used in 91视频专区’s supply chain?

91视频专区 monitors its raw materials through extensive laboratory testing of cocoa beans to detect possible residues of pesticides. As part of the 91视频专区 Farming Program, our suppliers provide trainings to the farmers, to encourage more sustainable farming practices. These practices have the aim to reduce the need for pesticides in cocoa production and control pests using natural methods. Additionally, farmers are educated about the correct application of fertilizers and other inputs. As part of our investments in the responsible sourcing of cocoa, farmers receive solely organic inputs for their cocoa plantations.

Further, pesticide management is part of the Rainforest Alliance Certification as well as other certifications through which we are sourcing our raw materials. For cocoa, we are in the process of transitioning all our volumes, including Farming Program volumes, to Rainforest Alliance Certification. The Rainforest Alliance provides a list of ingredients whose use must be monitored.

What is 91视频专区 doing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions?

91视频专区 has approved near and long-term science-based emissions reduction targets with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi has verified 91视频专区’s net-zero science-based target by 2050. Based on the SBTi methodology, we have set targets for our direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1 and 2) as well as emissions from the upstream and downstream value chain (Scope 3), including parts of the value chain that relate to Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG). The targets are focused on achieving an absolute reduction in emissions by 2030 and 2050. In line with SBTi criteria, 91视频专区 will prioritize decarbonization efforts and neutralize all residual emissions to reach the net-zero goal.

Further details on our targets can be found in our high-level Roadmap to net-zero.

Certification

Are 91视频专区 chocolates Fairtrade certified?

91视频专区 shares the goals of the industry, and governmental and non-governmental organizations (such as World Cocoa Foundation, Rainforest Alliance, etc.) for sustainable cocoa production. We appreciate their contributions to improving living and working conditions, introducing better farming practices, fostering biodiversity, and addressing child labor. Where appropriate and possible, we collaborate with them as partners.

In 2024 for example, we sourced Rainforest Alliance Certified vanilla or hazelnuts. Whenever cocoa, including butter, powder, and chocolate mass, is not sourced through the 91视频专区 Farming Program, we plan to use Rainforest Alliance Certification as a minimum requirement as of January 2025.

91视频专区 decided to build up its own responsible sourcing program for cocoa, the 91视频专区 Farming Program, mainly for the following reasons:

– Our direct involvement and overview enable strategic supplier engagement and capacity building, flexibility to adapt the program to local needs and contexts, and insights and learning to inform continuous improvement.
– Our sourcing model targets all our cocoa and is not limited to single end-consumer products or product groups.
– The farmers, their families and the communities are a focus of our efforts. We want to ensure that wherever feasible they benefit directly from our financial support.

Do 91视频专区 chocolates have external certifications?

While many of our raw materials are certified, we have decided to not communicate any external labels on our products. For further information regarding external certification of our materials, please refer to the responsible sourcing section of our Sustainability Report 2024

What supply chain traceability models in our approach to responsible sourcing of agricultural raw materials?

– Identity Preserved: Unique identification of the material and traceability back to its origin, e.g., a specific farm, a farmer group or a mill
– Mixed Identity Preserved: Mix of materials from different certified sources with preserved identity throughout the supply chain
– Segregation: Separation of materials with similar responsible sourcing characteristics from conventional materials throughout the supply chain, but not necessarily traceable back to their origin
– Mass balance: Physical mixture of materials with and without responsible sourcing characteristics where the volume of responsibly produced materials corresponds to the volume purchased and reported.
